"I kicked off New Year's 2010 with my typical 'lose weight & eat better' resolution. I was determined to do better than I had the year before (same old story). I had a four-month nutrition & exercise program that a friend recommended and I was committed to stick to it. On day 1 of the exercise program I stepped into the weight room of the wellness center at work and was immediately intimidated because an NSS coach was there working with clients. My confidence sagged and I wanted to leave, but I sucked it up and completed my workout.
A month and a half into my program, the exercises started getting more complex and I didn't know if I was doing everything right. Correct form was important to me and soon I was frustrated. A good friend suggested that I start training with Noonan's. I knew that if I didn't ask for help I would abandon my program. My coach worked with me to correct form, answered my questions, reminded me not to overthink things, pushed me toward my potential, and encouraged me to enjoy the journey. I was very impressed with the team at NSS, they clearly love what they do and believe in their mission.
As time went on, everything started to click. I loved weight training, I felt good and I gained confidence to train on my own time thanks to a great teacher. If I had a setback or started to overanalyze my coach would deliver straight-forward, wise advice. I started to seek out other forms of fitness and consult with my coach on learning kettlebell technique, training for a 5k, joining up with the NSS outdoor interval group, and learning how to bench press for a Pump & Run event. I saw body composition results and my confidence continued to grow.
In the fall of 2011 it was mentioned that I should consider competing in a powerlifting meet at NSS in January. Stand alone, in front of judges and an audience, and perform max-effort lifts? Yes, sign me up. I had a blast training for the powerlifting meet with a friend. My nutrition and training were focused on performance, and I was getting stronger and more confident every session. On New Year's Day 2012 I hit a milestone weight lost of 50 pounds! Thanks NSS for your expertise and encouragement."
