4 Meal Prep Hacks to Make Life Easier

I don't know about you, but when I hear that, I think of 7 days of organic food packed perfectly in pristine Tupperware containers in the fridge, right next to 6 lbs. of kale and my secret stash of wheatgrass.


Sarcasm? Yep.


When it comes to cooking or food prep, I certainly have knowledge of the food and what it contains, but if it weren't for my wife's brilliant cooking ability, I would be eating Kraft and frozen pizzas at an alarming rate.


Food prep is such a valuable skill, as it allows us to accommodate a busy schedule and always have something healthy on hand, but for many of us, it's just plain intimidating. The best way to overcome this is to just jump in head first and start with something simple. Your skill will rise as your confidence builds.


The first step I like to take is to pick the two least busy days of the week and use one for grocery shopping and prep, and the other for actual meal cooking and completion.

One of the easiest ways to make a meal would be to use your slow cooker. Set up is fast, cooking requires no supervision, and you can make a quantity large enough to last for a few days.


Another option is to put together freezer meals. Simply prepare the desired meals in desired quantities, freeze, and reheat when needed. This works well with soups and stews and can be a great way to up your vegetable intake without having to worry as much about produce going bad in your refrigerator before it can be used.

One of my favorite ways to have food prepped and ready is to simply separate snacks into appropriate serving size containers. It's painfully simple and addresses where most of us are the weakest: munching throughout the day. Put together baggies of almonds, platters with cut and washed veggies, maybe a Greek yogurt based veggie dip, pre-portioned fruit and nuts, etc.


Grabbing one of these then becomes as easy as grabbing a cookie or candy bar, and let's face it, ease of access is usually the biggest hindrance to healthy eating.

To sum up, no matter your level of food prep proficiency, no matter your schedule, and regardless of where you are, there is always a way to improve your nutrition situation to at least a small degree simply by investing a small amount of time to some of the above strategies.
