Prioritize Your Focus: What's Most Important In Nutrition
June 13, 2015
When it comes to nutrition, it’s often easy to get lost in the woods. Every day we see Facebook posts, read articles, and see TV ads, all telling us different stories regarding what we should and shouldn’t eat.
Nutrition is a complex subject, there’s no doubt about it, but sometimes taking a step back and simply prioritizing your focus can be a great way to get back to seeing results in your body composition and performance goals.
The graph shown above gives us a great foundation of what various components of nutrition will have the greatest effect on our body composition (thanks to Dr. Mike Israetel and Renaissance Periodization for allowing us to use this graph). As you can see, calorie balance is number one. After that is macronutrient intake, nutrient timing, food composition, then supplementation.
The whole point here is to make sure that you don’t spend all your energy in one area unnecessarily. For instance, if I’m putting all my effort into what type of supplements I’m using or where my carbs are coming from, but have not addressed calorie balance first, I’m going to greatly short change my potential results.
This is a great reminder and can save you a lot of potential trouble simply by helping you prioritize the most important factors in your nutrition plan.
