This week we are going to go over something a little different than fitness, rather development in another area. Check out this nifty system for a few tips on how to read more.
In 2015 I had a goal to up my reading game. I have tracked my "books read" for 5 straight years. I wanted to make a marked improvement from my previous years of reading anywhere between 11-19 books/year.
I set my goal to read 25+.
With a little friendly competition and a loose system for reading multiple books. I was able to blow past 25 and finish 45 books this year.
At some point in the next few years I would love to say I read a book for every week of the year but I am not about to force it. If my system/life schedule allows it should happen without a ton of extra emphasis.
1.) Always have a book with you. Even 10-15 minutes waiting to pick up the kids adds up over the year.
2.) Be reading 4 books all the time. Typically at any given time I am reading a hardcopy book for enjoyment. A hardcopy for personal/professional development. An audiobook, and a Kindle book (for reading in the dark).
3.) Mowing the lawn? Audiobook. Cleaning the garage? Audiobook. Driving anywhere? Audiobook. Books read by the author are my favorite and Audible.com is the bomb.
4.) Don't be afraid to NOT finish a book. If I wasn't really motivated to read a book midway through I shelved it and started something else. Then I would come back to it later. Or not.
5.) Outsource your reading deadlines. We started two book clubs at NSS in 2015. It allows me to set a hard deadline to read a certain amount of a book. Meeting that deadline is rewarded when the club gets together to discuss what we read.
