If you’re a student-athlete, your schedule can feel like a nonstop juggling act. Classes, homework, practices, games, and everything in between. In our previous post, we discussed rebuilding structure as the school year begins. Now let’s take it a step further with some practical time management hacks to help you stay sharp without burning out.
1. Treat Your Calendar Like Part of Training
Don’t just rely on memory. Use a planner, whiteboard, or phone app to block out your practices, games, homework deadlines, and recovery time. When you can see your schedule, it feels more manageable and parents can jump in to help plan around busy weeks.
2. Work in Short Bursts, Not Marathons
You don’t need a massive chunk of time to be productive. Try the 25/5 method: 25 minutes of focused homework followed by a 5-minute break. These “sprints” help you stay locked in, avoid procrastination, and keep energy levels steady after long practices.
3. Prioritize Sleep Like It’s Game Day
It’s tempting to stay up late finishing homework, but sleep has more impact on performance than another study session. Aim for 8–9 hours whenever possible. Parents can support their athletes by helping them set consistent bedtimes and reducing late-night distractions.
Final Thoughts
Managing your time isn’t about squeezing more in, it’s about protecting your energy so you can show up ready for school, prepared for practice, and ready for life. With a plan, focused work sessions, and enough sleep, student-athletes (and their parents) can find the balance to thrive all season long.
To make it even easier, we’ve created a Student-Athlete Time Management Checklist you can print and stick on the fridge. It’s a quick reminder for both athletes and parents to stay organized, stay rested, and stay ready all season long.
