Top 10 Questions Athletes Should Ask Themselves Before January

The end of the year is one of the most powerful times for athletes. School slows down, sports take breaks or shift seasons, and there’s finally space to breathe, reflect, and reset. Instead of waiting for January to “start fresh,” athletes can use this time to look back on their progress and set a strong foundation for the new year.

Here are 10 important questions every athlete should ask themselves before January. Questions that help them grow, take ownership, and step confidently into the year ahead.

1. What am I proud of from this year?

Athletes often rush past their wins, big or small. Taking a moment to acknowledge progress builds confidence and reinforces positive habits.

2. What challenged me the most and what did it teach me?

Setbacks shape athletes as much as successes. Understanding the lessons helps them approach future challenges with maturity and resilience.

3. Did my effort match my goals?

Effort isn’t about perfection, it’s about consistency. This question helps athletes reflect on whether their habits supported the results they wanted.

4. What skills improved the most this year?

Recognizing development helps athletes understand what’s working and what they should continue doing.

5. What skills or habits need more attention next year?

Growth comes from identifying the next steps, not just celebrating the current ones.

6. How well did I handle pressure, nerves, or tough moments?

Mental performance is just as important as physical skill. This question reveals gaps in preparation and mindset.

7. Did I take care of my body the way an athlete needs to?

Sleep, hydration, nutrition, recovery ... athletes can’t improve without them. Reflecting here creates awareness for better decisions moving forward.

8. How was I as a teammate?

Were they encouraging? Present? Respectful? Accountable? Team culture starts with individuals.

9. What do I want to achieve by the end of next season?

Clear goals point athletes in the right direction and help them train with purpose.

10. What’s one habit I can commit to in January that will make me better long-term?

Small, consistent changes can lead to significant improvements. One habit is all they need to start momentum.

Athletes don’t need a perfect plan to improve, they need self-awareness and direction. These questions help them pause, refocus, and enter the new year with clarity and confidence. January becomes less about “starting over” and more about continuing their growth with purpose.
